To find : values of a and b

Given equations : a + b = 11 and a - b = -3

Solution :

  • To solve the above equations we add both equations by solving LHS and RHS simultaneously.

               ( a+ b) + ( a - b ) = (11) + ( -3 )

                    a + b + a -b = 8

                                     2a = 8 \\a = 4

  • Now , substituting the value of a in one of the equations to find the value of b .

           a + b = 11\\4 + b = 11\\b = 11 - 4\\b = 7

Hence, on solving we get value of a = 4 and b = 7.
