Answer:

1st method

If you meant √[5 + 2√(6)] + √[8 - 2√(15)], we will need to "de-nest" them:

√(a) + √(b) = √[5 + 2√(6)]

a + 2√(ab) + b = 5 + 2√(6)

a + b = 5

2√(ab) = 2√(6)

ab = 6

b = 6/a

a + 6/a = 5

a^2 - 5a + 6 = 0

(a - 3)(a - 2) = 0

a = 2, 3

a = 2, b = 3 OR a = 3, b = 2 (it works out either way)

√[5 + 2√(6)] = √(3) + √(2)

-------

Now do it with the second one:

√(a) - √(b) = √[8 - 2√(15)]

a - 2√(ab) + b = 8 - 2√(15)

a + b = 8

-2√(ab) = -2√(15)

ab = 15

b = 15/a

a + 15/a = 8

a^2 - 8a + 15 = 0

(a - 3)(a - 5) = 0

a = 3, 5

a = 3, b = 5 (false because this would be negative)

a = 5, b = 3

√[8 - 2√(15)] = √(5) - √(3)

-------

Now add them together:

[√(3) + √(2)] + [√(5) - √(3)]

= √(5) + √(2)

2nd method

x= √(5 + 2√6) + √(8 – 2√15)

?

Then:

= √(5 + 2√6) + √(8 – 2√15)

= √(2 + 2√6 + 3) + √(5 – 2√15 + 3) ←←← Since 5=2+3 and 8=5+3

= √[(√2)² + 2(√2)(√3) + (√3)²] + √[(√5)² – 2(√5)(√3) + (√3)²]

Since =√²

= √(√2 + √3)² + √(√5 – √3)²

Since ²±2+²=(±)²

= (√2 + √3) + (√5 – √3)

Since √²=

= √2 + √5
