a)carbon form covalent bond as it is not so electro positive to loss electron and not so electronegative to gain electron . So it forms covalent bond
Tetravalency, catenation are some factors for carbon to form large number of compound

Beside it small size help to hold shared pair of electrons more closely

a. carbon forms covalent bonds because it is tetravalent ie.it has four electrons in its outermost shell because of which it is difficult for carbon to gain 4 electrons or to loose 4 electrons to form ionic bond. so it shares electrons and forms covalent bonds.

reason for carbon forming large nos of compounds:

1.tetravalency: with its four valency at a time it can share electron with four other carbon atoms or any monovalent element.

2.catenation: it is the self linking ability of carbon ie.linking with other carbon atoms due to which it forms so many compounds

b.ammonia is formed from the covalent bond ie.sharing of electrons between one atom of Nitrogen(5 valence electrons) and three atoms of Hydrogen(1 valence electron). The three valence electrons of three hydrogen atom gets shared with one Nitrogen atom of 5 valence electron and this enables the nitrogen to get the inert gas configuration (completely filled valence shell) and ammonia is formed by covalent bonds.
