Answer:

x = 2 and y = 3

Step-by-step explanation:

a) 0.2x + 0.3y = 1.3

=  2x/10 + 3y/10 = 13/10

=  (2x + 3y)/10 = 13/10

By Using cross multiplication,

  10 (2x + 3y) = 10 (13)

  2x + 3y = 13

Multiplying both sides by 2.....

  2 (2x + 3y) = 13

  4x + 6y = 26                                  -----(1)

b) 0.4x + 0.5y = 2.3

=  4x/10 + 5y/10 = 23/10

= (4x + 5y)/10 = 23/10

By Using cross multiplication,

  10 (4x + 5y) = 10 (23)

   4x + 5y = 23                               -----(2)

Subtracting (1) from (2)

4x + 5y - 4x - 6y = 23 - 26

-y = -3

y = 3

∵ 2x + 3y = 13

∴ x = (13 - 3y)/2

  x = (13 - 3×3)/2

  x = 4/2

  x = 2

∴ x = 2 and y = 3.
