18 -  \frac{3y}{4}  = 11 + y \\  \\  \frac{72 - 3y}{4}  = 11 + y \\  \\ 72 - 3y = 44 + 4y \\  \\ 7y = 28 \\  \\ y = 4

The substitution method is most useful for systems of 2 equations in 2 unknowns.

We solve one of the equations for one of the unknowns, and then substitute the result into the other equation.
