Question:

  • Solve for x: 2(5 - 3x) = 13

To Find:

  • The value of x = ?

Solution:

2(5 - 3x) = 13

After opening the brackets, we get:

10 - 6x = 13

On tranposing 10 to RHS, we get:

-6x = 13 - 10

-6x = 3

On solving further, we get:

x = -\cancel{\dfrac{3}{6}}

x = -\dfrac{1}{2}

Extra Information:

  • Variable is a quantity that can take any value, its value is not fixed.
  • Expressions are formed by performing operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on the variables.

Eg: 6x - 3

  • Equation is a condition on a variable such that two expressions in the variable should have equal value.

Eg: 3x - 7 = 14

  • The value of the variable in an equation for which the equation is true is called the solution of the equation.

Eg: Solution for : 3x - 7 = 14 is x = 7.

  • Methods to slove an equation are:
  1. Trial and Error Method
  2. Systematic Method
  3. Transposition \:\:\:\longrightarrow\:\:\: This\: is\: used\: here.
  • Transposition: A process in which a term is moved from one side to the other with no change in its sign is called transposition.

2(5-3x)=13

2*5=10
2*3x=6x

10-6x=13
-6x+10=13
-6x=13-10
-6x=3
x=-3/6
x=-1/2
