Take the rational number as 'x'

So,

 \frac{ - 5}{11}  + x =  \frac{ - 7}{8}  \\  \frac{ - 5}{11}  +  \frac{7}{8} =  - x \\  \frac{ - 40 + 77}{88}   =  - x \\  - x =   -  \frac{37}{88}  \\ x =  \frac{37}{88}

The rational number that should be added to -5/11 to get -7/8 is 37/88
