Answer:

we can separate the coloured components of a mixture by the process CHROMATOGRAPHY.

EXPERIMENT :

here is the experiment,

AIM : To separate the dyes present in ink.

MATERIALS REQUIRED :

  • Rectangular filter paper.
  • Water soluble ink.
  • Large size glass jar.
  • water.

PRINCIPLE : Selectively Adsorption.

PROCEDURE :

  • take a filter paper and draw 3 cm line about the lower edge of the filter paper by using a pencil.
  • now put a small drop of ink at the centre of the line and let it dry.
  • lower the filter paper into the Jar of water so that the drop of ink in the paper is just above the water level.

OBSERVATION : we can find different colours (based on the ink) on the filter paper.

CONCLUSION : by capillary action the water slowly moves upwards passing through the ink spot. (Ink is a mixture of water in dye)

usually a dye is a mixture of two or more colours. so the different colours move with different velocities and settle at different heights on the paper.

the coloured component that is more soluble in water rises faster and settles at the top.

hence we can find the coloured components present in the ink.

APPLICATIONS :

  • to separate colours in a dye
  • to separate pigments from natural colours
  • to separate drugs from blood.
  • to separate and analyse a mixture of gases liquids or dissolved substances.
  • to find out what chemicals are present in mixtures such as petroleum products, cigarette smoke, smoke etc..
