Given :

  • Thrice a number minus twice the second is equal to 10.
  • The sum of these numbers is 10.

 \:

To Find :

  • The numbers.

 \:

Solution :

Let,

ㅤㅤ❐ the first number be x.

ㅤㅤ❐ the second number be y.

Now,

\fbox{\bf{3x - 2y = 10}} - - - - - - \sf{ [Equation \: No. \: (i) ] }

\fbox{\bf{x + y = 10}} - - - - - - \sf{ [Equation \: No. \: (ii) ] }

From equation no. (ii), we get

➟ x = 10 - y

Substituting x = 10 - y in equation no. (i), we get

➟ 3x - 2y = 10

➟ 3(10 - y) - 2y = 10

➟ 30 - 3y - 2y = 10

➟ 30 - 5y = 10

➟ -5y = 10 - 30

➟ y = -20/-5

➟ y = 4

Hence, y = 4.

Now,

Substituting y = 4 in equation no. (ii), we get

➺ x + y = 10

➺ x + 4 = 10

➺ x = 10 - 4

➺ x = 6

Hence, x = 6.

──

∴ The numbers are :

ㅤㅤ❍ x = 6

ㅤㅤ❍ y = 4
