Answer:

for ax^2 + bx + c the factors are (x-d)(x-e) with d, e given by

        -b + sqrt(b^2 -4ac)

    d = -------------------

               2a

        -b - sqrt(b^2 -4ac)

    e = -------------------

               2a

   This method works for all equations nicely and is really good for

   calculators, but can get messy for people.  For your quadratic we

   have a = 1, b = -1, c = -2 thus

        1 + sqrt(1 - 4(-2))     1 + sqrt(1 +8)         1+3

    d = -------------------- = ------------------- =  ----- = 2

               2                      2                2

        1 - sqrt(1 - 4(-2))    1-3

    e = -------------------- = ---- = -1

               2                2

   so:

     (x^2 - x - 2) = (x - 2)(x - -1) = (x-2)(x+1)

Answer:

(Alpha+1)(beta+1)

Alpha=-1

Beta=-1

C=alpha*beta

Therefore c=(-1)(-1)

C=1
