Definition

  • ⇒ A fossil fuel is a buried materials formed by natural processes, such as anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms like plants or animals, containing energy. The process of the Formation is not slow, but it takes many years to form.
  • Petrol, Coal, Natural Gas are the major fossils fuel which we uses.
  • The age of the organisms and their resulting fossil fuels is typically millions of years, and sometimes exceeds 650 million years.

  • For exactly determining the age of the fossils fuels, we follow the method of the carbon Dating.
  • This is one of the Famous method of the Radioactivity which is used for finding the age of the Rocks or Fossil fuels.

What are fossils?

Fossils are the remains of creatures preserved in the stone. The fossils of microorganisms are called microfossils.

How is the age determined?

Let's assume, we researched the carbon ratio in both air and a fossil.

It turns out the carbon ratio in the air now is 8 times higher than the fossil. We know the ratio of carbon element does not change in the air.

How old is the fossil?

The age of fossils is determined by a ratio of an element. Each element has its own half-life. If we compare the original ratio and present ratio, we can find the age, because it decreased by half.

This is called radiocarbon dating because the method uses only one kind of carbon element which is most radioactive. Now we know how to solve the problem.

The carbon is decreasing in half every 5730 years. This means the carbon ratio dropped three times. The age of the fossil is 17190 years old.

What are other ways?

There are different methods, such as finding the age of the stratum, or we can even use other radioactive elements. All of the methods are called dating.
