m₁ = 5 kg

m₂ = 10 kg

To find

Acceleration of system. [Acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 m/s²]

Solution

force of gravity of m₁   [F₁]  = m₁ × a

= 5 kg × 9.8 m/s²

= 49 Newton

Force of gravity of m₂  [F₂]  = m₂ × a

= 10 kg × 9.8 m/s²

= 98 Newton

Unbalanced force on system = F₂ - F₁

= 98 - 49

= 49 Newtons

Total mass = 5 + 10 = 15 kg

We know that A = Unbalanced F/M

A = 49 newtons ÷ 15 kg

A (acceleration) = 3.27 m/s²
