The question requires the concept of PYTHAGORAS THEOREM.

Pythagoras theorem states that in a right triangle, the square of the Hypotenuse is equal to the sum of square of the other two sides of the triangle.
This means that :-

H²=P² +B²

Where,
H is the Hypotenuse
P is the perpendicular
B is the base of the right triangle.

In the question we have been given that the distance towards North is 12km and the final position is 15km away frim initial position.
This means that Hypotenuse is given as 15km
Using Pythagoras theorem we can find the third side as we have the two sides given already.

Please refer the above photograph for the used process.
The distance towards east is 9 km.
