let thief takes x mins thus time taken by police will be x-1 min.

now speed of thief is constant 100m/min.

so distance travelled by thief =100x m.

but speed of police is in ap as

100,110,120.........till (x-1) .

now distance travelled by police

=x-1/2(200+10x-20)

(x-1)(90+5x)

but this is equal to 100x

90x+5x^2-90-5x=100x

5x^2-15x-90=0

x^2-3x-18=0

x=6and -3

therefore time taken to catch the thief is 5min.
