in first part of circuit ....

R1 =3 ohm

R2 = 5 ohm

R1 and R2 are in series connection ..

so ..

R1 + R2 = Rs

3 + 5 = Rs

8 ohm = Rs ............ (1)

now in 2nd part ...

R1= 2 ohm

R2 =3 ohm

so R1 and R2 are in parallel connection {by Diagram }

1/ R1 + 1/R2 = 1/Rp

1 / 3 + 1/2 =1/ Rp

2 + 3 / 6 = 1/Rp

5 / 6 =1/ Rp .......(2)

now Rs and Rp are in parallel so ....

1/ Rs + 1/Rp = 1/total R

1/8 + 5/6 =1/ total R

6+8/ 48 =1/ total R

14 / 48 = 1/total R

48 /14 = total R

3.42 = total R
