Equation 1=> x + y = 4

Equation 2=> 7x + 9y = 42

Multiplying equation 1 with 7

=> 7x + 7y = 28 -------- (3)

Subtracting equation (3) from equation 2 -

=> 7x + 9y = 42

.... -7x - 7y = -28

=> 0 + 2y = 14

=> 2y =14

=>y = \frac{14}{2}

=> \huge\pink{y=7}

\orange{Using\:value\:of\:y\:in\:equation\:1}

=> x + y = 4

=> x + 7 = 4

=> x = 4 - 7

=> \huge\blue{x=-3}
