x²-5x-2=0

Multiply the equation throughout by 4, we get

4x²-20x-8=0

This is the same as

(2x)²-2(2x)(5)+5²-5²-8=0

(2x-5)²-25-8=0

(2x-5)²-33=0

(2x-5)²= 33

2x-5=±√33

2x = 5± \sqrt{33}  \\ x =  \frac{5 ± \sqrt{33}  }{2}  \\ x =  \frac{5 +  \sqrt{33} }{2}  ,  \:  \:  \:  \frac{5 -  \sqrt{33} }{2}  \\

Therefore, the roots are (5+√33)/2 and (5-√33)/2
