Answer:

When y = 1:

1/3(1) + 5 = 16/3

LHS >< RHS

When y = 2:

1/3(2) + 5 = 17/3

LHS >< RHS

When y = 3:

1/3(3) + 5 = 6

LHS >< RHS

When y = 4:

1/3(4) + 5 = 19/3

LHS >< RHS

When y = 5:

1/3(5) + 5 = 20/3

LHS >< RHS

When y = 6:

1/3(6) + 5 = 7

LHS >< RHS

When y = 7:

1/3(7) + 5 = 22/3

LHS >< RHS

When y = 8:

1/3(8) + 5 = 23/3

LHS >< RHS

When y = 9:

1/3(9) + 5 = 8

LHS = RHS

Thus, the value of y is 9.

This is a long method. In examination you don't have this much time to find out which value of y suits the equation. Thus, a better method is as follows:

Equation: 1/3y + 5 = 8

Transport 5 on the RHS:

=> 1/3y = 8 - 5 = 3

=> y/3 = 3

Take 3 on the RHS. The division sign changes to multiplication:

= y = 9

In the examination, you can first take the answer out on the rough side and then show only the part which is required. You will not need to waste your precious time then :)

Thank You!
