substitution,

x+3y=10

x=10-3y.........(i)

now,

2x+y=5......(ii)

putting (i) in (ii) , we get

2(10-3y)+ y=5

20-6y+ y=5

20-5y=5

20-5=5y

15/5=y

therefore,

y=3

and putting y=3 in(i)

x=10-3y

=10-3(3)

=10-9

=1
