Solution:-

99x + 101y = 499 ..........(i) eq

101x + 99y = 501 ..........(ii) eq

Clearly , the coefficient of x and y in one equation are interchanged in the other

Adding (i) and (ii) , we get

99x + 101y + 101x + 99y = 499 + 501

99x + 101x + 101y + 99y =1000

200x + 200y = 1000

200( x + y ) = 1000

x + y = 1000/200

x + y = 5 ..............(iii) eq

Subtracting (ii) from (i)

101x + 99y - ( 99x + 101y ) = 501 - 499

101x + 99y - 99x - 101y = 2

2x - 2y = 2

2(x - y ) = 2

x - y = 1 ............(iv)eq

Now using elimination method

Adding (iii) and (iv) , we get

x + y + x - y = 5 + 1

2x = 6

x = 3

Now put the value of x on (iv) eq

x - y = 1

3 - y = 1

- y = - 2

y = 2

Answer:- x = 3 and y = 2
