$x = \frac{ - 1 \: \pm \: \sqrt{1 - 4(2)( - 1)} }{2 \times 2}$

$x = \frac{ - 1 \: \pm \: \sqrt{1 + 8} }{4}$

$x = \frac{ - 1 \: \pm \: \sqrt{9} }{4}$

$(x = \frac{ - 1 + 9}{4} ) \: or \:( x = \frac{ - 1 - 9}{4} )$

$x = 2 \: or \: \frac{ - 5}{2}$
