x+y = 5

x-y = 13

x+y+x-y = 5+13 2x = 18 x = 9

Now, x+y = 5 9+y = 5 y = 5-9 = -4

Answer:

x = 9 \\ y =  - 4

Step-by-step explanation:

Given :

x + y = 5 \\ x - y = 13

Compare Above Equations and Add Both of Them ;

x + y = 5 \\ x - y = 13 \\  -  -  -  -  -  \\ 2x = 18 \\ x =  \frac{18}{2}  \\ x = 9

Now Put x = 9 in Equation 1,

x + y = 5 \\ 9 + y = 5 \\ y = 5 - 9 \\ y =  - 4
