given equations,

4x - y = 5 ....... (1)

2x - 3y = -1 .......(2)

multiply equation (1) by 2 and equation (2) by 4 to make the coefficients of x equal,

4x - y = 5 ..... x 2

= 8x - 2y = 10 ....... (eq. 3)

2x - 3y = -1 ...... x 4

= 8x - 12y = -4 .......(eq. 4)

now, subtract (eq.3) from (eq.4) to eliminate x, because they are same,

8x - 12y = -4

8x - 2y = 10

(-) (+)

--------------------

10y = 6

y = 6/10

________________________

substituting value of y in (1)

4x - 6/10 = 5

4x/1 - 6/10 = 5

40x/10 - 6/10 = 5

(40x - 6)/10 = 5

40x - 6 = 50

40x = 56

x = 56/40

= 28/20

= 14/10
