Given:

A number is 3 less than another number.

By adding 17 to twice the larger number it becomes thrice the smaller number.

Find:

This number.

Solution:

Let the largest number be x

Let the smaller number be y

We have,

A number is 3 less than another number. By adding 17 to twice the larger number it becomes thrice the smaller number

=> 2x + 17 = 3(x - 3)

=> 2x + 17 = 3x - 9

=> 2x - 3x = -9 - 17

=> -x = - 26

=> x = 26

So,

Larger numbers => x = 26

Smaller number => x - 3 = 26 - 3 = 23

Hence, the two numbers are 26 and 23 .

I hope it will help you.

Regards.
