Adding both the equations,

x - y + 2x + y = 3 + 9
3x = 12
x = 12/3 = 4

Substituting this value of x in first equation,
x - y = 3
Since x = 4,
4 - y = 3
y = 4 - 3 = 1

Therefore, x = 4 and y = 1
