ANSWER:

Given:

  • 4x + 6y = 18 ; 2x - y = 20

To Find:

  • Value of x and y

Solution:

We are given that,

⇒4x + 6y = 18 --------(1)

And,

⇒2x - y = 20 --------(2)

Multiplying (2) with 2,

⇒2(2x - y = 20)

⇒4x - 2y = 40 --------(3)

Now, we will subtract (3) from (1), so that x gets eliminated.

⇒4x + 6y - (4x - 2y) = 18 - 40

⇒4x + 6y - 4x + 2y = -22

⇒8y = -22

⇒y = -22/8

y = -11/4

Putting value of y in (2),

⇒2x - y = 20

⇒2x - (-11/4) = 20

⇒2x + 11/4 = 20

⇒2x = 20 - 11/4

⇒2x = 69/4

⇒x = 69/8

Hence, value of x is (69/8) and that of y is (-11/4).
