x +2y =1 -------1equation
____________________

3x - y =17  -----2equation

_____________________

x+ 2y = 1      multiply by 1
3x-y   = 17     multiply by 2

  x + 2y =1
6x - 2y  = 34
____________

7x = 35
____________
x =35/7

x = 5

Now,

Putting the value of x in 1equation,

x + 2y =1

5 + 2y =1

2y = 1-5

2y = -4

y = -4/2

y =  -2

_______________________

x  = 5

And y =  -2

Hii friend,

X + 2Y = 1.........(1)

3X - Y = 17........(2)

FROM EQUATION (1) WE GET,

X + 2Y = 1

X = 1-2Y.......(3)

PUTTING THE VALUE OF X IN EQUATION (2)

3X - Y = 17

3 × (1-2Y) - Y = 17

3 - 6Y - Y = 17

-7Y = 17-3

-7Y = 14

Y = 14/-7 = -2

PUTTING THE VALUE OF Y IN EQUATION (3)

X = 1-2Y

= 1 - 2 × -2

= 1+4 = 5.

THEREFORE,

X = 5 AND Y = -2.

HOPE IT WILL GET YOU..... :-)
