Given -

》ratio of two numbers is 4:13

》sum of the numbers is 493.

To find -

the two numbers = ?

To proceed -

ratio = 4:13 (In simplified form)

=》Let common multiple be x.

Thus,

1st number = 4 × x => 4x

2nd number = 13 × x => 13x

• 1st number + 2nd number =493

=> 4x + 13x = 493

=> 17x = 493

=> x = 493/17

=> x = 29

=》So, the common multiple is 29

=》We multiply the common multiple with the terms of the ratio to find the numbers.

So -

1st number = 4 × 29

= 116

2nd number = 13 × 29

= 377

Thus, the numbers are 116 and 377.

To verify -

Find the sum of the two numbers, if it is equal to 493 then they are correct.

=> 116 + 377

=> 493

Hence, verified as correct.

More to know -

■ The first term of a ratio is called as antecedent.

■ The second term of a ratio is called as consequent.

Eg. In ratio m:n -

m is antecedent.

n is consequent.
