location has a demand for material that needs to be met and also send surplus material
to the next location. The demand at B is 800, at C is 500, at D is 1400 and at E is 400.
The arrow indicates the direction of flow of material through the pipeline. The quantity
of material flow from B to C is 600. What is the minimum material quantity moved from
A to E such that demand is met at all locations?

Given :   The layout shows a pipeline for carrying material from one location to another

The demand at B is 800, at C is 500, at D is 1400 and at E is 400.

The arrow indicates the direction of flow of material through the pipeline. The quantity of material flow from B to C is 600.

To Find : the minimum material quantity moved from A to E such that demand is met at all locations

Solution:

          B               C                D

A

                E

The demand at B is 800

The demand at C is 500

The demand at D is 1400

The demand at E is  400

quantity of material flow from B to C is 600.

The demand at D is 1400 and  The demand at C is 500

and there is flow from C to D only

Hence material availability at C      = 1400 + 500 = 1900   ( Both C  & D demand )

The quantity of material flow from B to C is 600

Hence  at least quantity of material flow  E to C   = 1900 - 600 = 1300

The demand at E is  400

Hence   at least quantity of material flow A to E = 1300 + 400 = 1700

minimum material quantity moved from A to E such that demand is met at all locations = 1700
