a) The function is that alveoli acts a medium of exchange of gases. Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place in alveoli only.
b) Rate of breathing is much faster because oxygen is dissolved in water and the aquatic animals have to take the dissolved oxygen to breathe. This is not the case for the terrestrial organisms.
Oxygen is directly present in her therefore allowing terrestrial animals to directly take this oxygen whereas in aquatic animals they have to respite much more faster to take the dissolved oxygen.

Answer:alveoli is basic functional and structural unit of lungs helps to absorb Oxygen and mixes it directly with blood vessels and release CO2 which in turn get outside of body.
(b). concentration of Oxygen is less in water then outer atmosphere so they have to breath faster to gain more oxygen to maintain body temperature and get a sufficiently amount of Oxygen.
