Given : Mean of x and 1/x  is 5

To Find :  Mean of  x² + 1/x²

Solution:

Mean of x and 1/x  is 5

=> (x + 1/x)/2 = 5

=> x + 1/x  = 10

Squaring both sides

=> x² + 1/x² + 2x(1/x) = 10²

=> x² + 1/x² + 2 = 100

=>  x² + 1/x² = 98

=> ( x² + 1/x² )/2 = 49

Mean of  x² + 1/x² is  ( x² + 1/x² )/2

Hence Mean of  x² + 1/x² is   49
