Question 1 :

Laxmi obtained an average of 70 in maths and English and an average of 60 in maths and science . If she obtained 55 marks in English , find her marks in maths and science .

Solution :

Let the marks in Maths be x .

$Average=\frac{sum\:of\:terms}{number\:of\:terms}\\\\\implies 70=\frac{x+55}{2}\\\\\implies x+55=70\times2\\\\\implies x+55=140\\\\\implies x=140-55\\\\\implies x=85$

Let the marks in English be y .

$Average=\frac{sum\:of\:terms}{number\:of\:terms}\\\\\implies 60=\frac{x+y}{2}\\\\\implies x+y=60\times 2\\\\\implies 85+y=120\\\\\implies y=120-85\\\\\implies y=35$

Hence Laxmi got 85 in Maths and 35 in Science .

Question 2 :

The average age of Ram and Hari is 15 years , and that of Hari and Mohan is 14 years . If Ram is 17 years old , find the age of Hari and Mohan .

Solution :

Let Hari's age be x .

$15=\frac{x+17}{2}\\\\\implies x+17=15\times 2\\\\\implies x+17=30\\\\\implies x=30-17\\\\\implies x=13$

Let the age of Mohan be y .

$14=\frac{x+y}{2}\\\\\implies x+y=14\times 2\\\\\implies x+y=28\\\\\implies 13+y=28\\\\\implies y=28-13\\\\\implies y=15$

The age of Hari is 13 and age of Mohan is 15 years .
