5x + 2y =  -3   -----1equation
x + 5y = 4      ------2equation

5x + 2y =  -3   multiply by 1
 x  +5y = 4      multiply by  5 
__________________


5x +  2y =  -3
5x + 25y = 20
-   -           -    [subtracting both equations]

- 23y =-23 
_____________________
23y =23

y = 23/23

y =1

putting the value of y in 1 equation 

5x + 2y = -3

5x + 2 = -3

5x = -3 -2

5x =  -5

x =-5/5

x =-1

y = 1 

x = -1
