3a + 2b = 47 ......i

2a – 2b = -12 .....ii

Using the linear combination method

we get

3a + 2b = 47

+2a – 2b = -12

5a + 0 = 35

or, a = 35/5

so, a = 7

substituting value of a in equation ii

2a - 2b = -12

or 2×7 - 2b = -12

or 14 + 12 = 2b

or 16 = 2b

so, b = 8

Therefore a = 7 and b = 8
