We define the quality factor of circuit as follows

Quality factor, Q = 2π × ( Total energy stored in the circuit / loss and the energy in each cycle)

But Total energy stored in circuit

= Li^2rms

and the energy loss per second

= i^2rms R

So loss in energy per cycle = i^2rms R / f

Hence quality factor,

Q = 2π × [ L i^2rms / ( i^2rms R/f ) ]

Q = 2π f t L / R

Q = ω L /R

∴The Quality factor of RL circuit is

ω L/ R !
