Let the number of pages in the book = $x$

Read part = $\frac{7}{9} \ of \ x \ = \ \frac{7x}{9}$

remaining or part left = $x \ - \ \frac{7x}{9} \ = \ \frac{2x}{9}$

also, the pages left = 40 .......................(given in the question)

so, ACQ

$\frac{2x}{9} \ = \ 40\\\\ 2x \ = 40 X 9 \\\\ x \ = \frac{40 X 9}{2} \\\\ x \ = \ 180$

So, the number of pages in the book = 180 ----------------- Ans

Part of book (pages) read = 7/9

part left = 1 - 7/9 = 2/9

also , part of book (pages) left = 40

so, 2/9 of pages = 40
