3y^2-9y-y+3

3y(y-3)-1(y-3)

(3y-1)(y-1)

y=1/4


y=1

An equation must have equality that is equal sign. So if we put the above polynomial eqal to zero the we can solve this.
3y^2-10y+3
3y^2-9y-y+3
3y(y-3)-(y-3)
(3y-1)(y-3)
y=3
or
y=1/3
