Let the total land of the man = x

Man sold 1/2 of his land.

Land sold = x × 1/2 = x/2

Remaining land after sell =
x -  \frac{x}{2}  =  \frac{2x- x}{2}  =  \frac{x}{2}

He gave 1/2 of the remaining land to his son and 1/3 to his daughter.

He gave to his son = 1/2 × x/2 = x/4

he gave to his daughter = 1/3 × x/2 = x/6

Total amount given to son and daughter =
 \frac{x}{4}  +  \frac{x}{6}  =  \frac{3x + 2x}{12}  =  \frac{5x}{12}

Remaining land after giving =
 \frac{x}{2}  -  \frac{5x}{12}  =  \frac{6x - 5x}{12}  =  \frac{x}{12}

He is left with x/12.

So fraction of land left with him is 1/12.
