y^2 - 2y -7=0

here, a= 1, b= -2 and c= -7

therefore, α+β= -b/a = 2/1 = 2

αβ= c/a = -7/1 = -7

(i) α^2 + β^2 = (α + β)^2 = α^2 + β^2 +αβ = 2^2 + (-7) = 4 -7 = -3

(ii) α^3 + β^3 = (α+β)^3 = α^3 + β^3 +3α^2 + 3β^2

2^3+ 3(α+β) (αβ) = 8+3(2) x (-7)

8-42 = -34

hope this helps you!!
