ᴇxᴘʟᴀɪɴᴀᴛɪᴏɴ

Statements

  • A) All rivers are mountains
  • B) Some rivers are deserts

For easy visuization, draw a venn diagram of the sets River, Mountain, Desert which satisfy the two statements. Then, we can check the validity of the conclusions as follows:

Conclusion l

Since all rivers are mountain, we can say that some mountains constitute all rivers. Also, some of these rivers(which are mountains) are desert, so some mountains(which are rivers) are deserts.

Conclusion ll

We only know that some rivers are deserts i. e. some deserts are river and hence mountain. But no information is given about the the deserts which are not river. Hence, no conclusion can be drawn whether there are deserts which are not mountain or not.
