Question :-

What should be added to [ 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/5] to get 4?

Answer :-

89/30

Solution :-

Let the number be x

According to the question :-

[ 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/5] + x = 4

Transpose [ 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/5] to RHS

⇒ x = 4 - [ 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/5]

Remove brackets

⇒ x = 4 - 1/2 - 1/3 - 1/5

Taking LCM

⇒ x = 4(30)/1(30) - 1(15)/2(15) - 1(10)/3(10) - 1(6)/5(6)

⇒ x = 120/30 - 15/30 - 10/30 - 6/30

⇒ x = 120/30 - 31/30

⇒ x = (120 - 31)/30

⇒ x = 89/30

Verification :-

[ 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/5] + x = 4

Substituting value of x

⇒ [ 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/5] + 89/30 = 4

⇒ 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/5 + 89/3 = 4

Taking LCM

⇒ 1(15)/2(15) + 1(10)/3(10) + 1(6)/5(6) + 89/30 = 4

⇒ 15/30 + 10/30 + 6/30 + 89/30 = 4

⇒ (15 + 10 + 6 + 89)/30 = 4

⇒ 120/30 = 4

⇒ 4 = 4
