Given

  • Force of 100N acts on a body.
  • Mass of the body = 20 kg.
  • Force accelerates the body from rest until it attains a velocity of 20 m/s.

To Find

  • Distance the force acts on.

Solution

Force acting on the body (F) = 100N

Mass of body (m) = 20 kg

Initial Velocity (u) = 0 m/s

Final Velocity (v) = 20 m/s

Acceleration (a) = ?

Distance the force acts on (s) = ?

According to the Second Law of Motion,

Force = Mass × Acceleration

100 = 20 × a

a = 100 ÷ 20

a = 5 m/s²

∴ The acceleration produced by the body is 5 m/s².

Now, we'll apply the third equation of motion to find the Distance.

Third Equation of Motion ⇒ v² - u² = 2as

Substitute the values of the variables and find the value of 's'.

(20)² - (0)² = 2 × 5 × s

400 = 10s

s = 400 ÷ 10

s = 40 m

∴ The distance the force acts through is 40 meters.
