HELLO DEAR,
equal distances are covered at 60 kmph and 40 kmph,
we can use the formula
average speed = (2v1v2)/(v1 + v2)
=> (2×40×60)/(40 + 60)
=> (4800)/100
=> 48kmph
explaination,
Let the distance to one side = x
Total distance = 2x
time taken for the forward journey = x/40
Time taken for the return journey = x/60
NOW,
total time = x/60 + x/40 = 100x/2400 = x/24
NOW,
average speed = total distance / total time
average speed = 2x/(x/24)
=> 48kmph
