Answer:

Let their present ages be x and 20−x yrs respectively.

Four years ago, their ages would be (x-4) and (16-x) yrs respectively.

(x−4)(16−x)=48

16x−x

2

−64+4x=48

x

−20x+112=0

b

−4ac=−48

Since the discriminant <0, the roots would be imaginary.

Hence, such a situation is not possible.

Answer:

Let the present age of First friend = x

And the present age of second friend = y

The sum of their ages is 20

x + y = 20

Four years ago,

age of first friend = x-4

Age of second friend = y - 4

(x-4) (y - 4) = 48

xy - 4x - 4y + 16 = 48

xy - 4(x + y) = 32

xy - 4 × 20 = 32

xy - 80 = 32

xy = 112

y = 112/x

x + 112/x = 20

x² + 112 = 20x

x² - 20x + 112 = 0

Not Possible ..

Have a great day ahead
