See now a^2 + b ^2 = 40 so as we know there exist two pairs whose sum of square is 40
They are
1.{(-2),(-6)}
2.{(2),(6)}

Hence by putting one of root in equation we get the value of k
By putting 2 we get
f (x) = 2^2 - 8 *2 + k
0 = 4 - 16 + k
0 = - 12 + k
12 = k

HENCE THE value of K IS 12

HOPE SO THIS HELPS U

{NOTE} :- REFER THE PICTURES TO FIND THE SQUARE ROOT OR ZEROS OF EQUATION.
IT IS THE SIMPLEST WAY TO FIND.
