squaring \: on \: both \: sides

(m +  \frac{1}{m} ) {}^{2}  =  {3}^{2}

 {m}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{ {m}^{2} }  + 2 = 9

Step-by-step explanation:

m+1/m=3

square both sides

(m+1/m)(m+1/m)=9

m2+1/m2+2m×1/m=9

m2+1/m2=9-2=7
