HIGHLY REACTIVE METAL SUCH AS  'K' , 'Na', ETC HAVE AN HIGHER AFFINITY TOWARDS OTHER GASES SUCH OXYGEN , CARBON DIOXIDE ,SULPHIDE , ETC

THESE METALS CANNOT BE HEATED AND CONVERTED IN THEIR OXIDE FORMS BECAUSE THEIR BONDS WITH OTHER ELEMENTS ARE VERY STRONG . THUS WE NEED TO PUT THEM THROUGH THE PROCESS OF ELECTROLYSIS .

IN ELECTROLYSIS ... THE ELECTROLYTE USED ISMOLTEN CHLORIDE OF THE METAL. THE METAL IS FORMED AT THE CATHODE (NEGATIVE SIDE)

WHEREAS CHLORINE IS LIBERATED AT ANODE (POSITIVE SIDE). IN THIS WAY WE GET THE METAL

EQUATION :

At cathode : Na + e = Na

At anode    :  2Cl = Cl2 + 2e

Yes it is diff because the metals who are high up in the reactivity series are highly reactive so they are extracted by electrolytic refining of there molten chlorides and oxides eg sodium. During this process metals are produced at cathode and oxygen and chlorine at anode

NaCl-->(electrolysis) NaOH + Cl2 + o2

HOPE THIS HELPS
