(b) Light emitted by distant stars passes through the atmosphere of the Earth before reaching our eyes . The atmosphere of the Earth is not uniform but consist of many layers of different densities . As the light from the stars enters the uppermost layer of atmosphere, it bends towards the normal as it enters the next layer . This process continues due to which the apparant position of the star is different from the actual position of the star .

Moreover , the different layer of the atmosphere are mobile , hence the apparant position of the star changes continuously that leads to the twinkling of a star.
