The mass of a small particle is such that the entire particle can be heated to ignition temperature. An iron rod will not burn as it has relatively very less surface area per unit mass but iron filings with more surface area per unit mass can burn in air and get converted to iron oxide.

hope it would help u

hey!
Burning" is a reaction between a combustible substance and oxygen. Contrary to common belief, many metals including iron) are combustible, meaning that they will react with oxygen and release heat. The reason an iron bar won't generally burn is because the oxygen can't get inside.
hope it helps
