the distance travelled by the thief = 100 ( n+1 )  because thief started 1 minute before the policeman

the distance travelled by the policeman = n/2 ( 2 * 100 + (n-1) 10)

now equate the 2 equations

100 ( n+1 ) = n/2 ( 200 + 10n - 10 )

200 ( n+1 ) = 200n + 10n² - 10n

divide by 10 on both sides

20n + 20 = 20n + n² -n

20 = n² - n

n²-n-20 = 0

by solving this equation we get

n = 5 or -4

obviously the thief can not be caught is nrgative minutes

so the answer is 5 minutes
